Sets the maximum amount your insurer pays per day for your hospital room. If you stay in a room that costs more than this limit, your insurer may also reduce what they pay on your other hospital bills - like doctor fees and surgery charges - not just the room cost. Plans with no room rent cap give you the most protection.
Niva BupaStrongReAssure 3.0 · BlackBlack has no room capping at all; the other three stop at a category. If you take a room above your category, a flat co-pay from Annexure V applies to the entire claim, not just the room charge. Your plan fixes the room you are eligible for.
On Classic plan, claiming any room category above General Ward costs you 20% to 50% of the whole admissible claim. On a Rs 4,00,000 hospital stay at the 40% band, you pay Rs 1,60,000 from your own pocket.
Star HealthStrongSuper StarYour hospital room is covered at Any Room, with no daily rupee cap and no room category ceiling, up to your Sum Insured. There is an option of Room Rent Modification which restrict it to Single Private AC Room, Shared Room or General Ward, and you can opt out of it only during the first renewal.
If you buy Room Rent Modification and then take a room above the category you chose, the insurer pays your professional fees, operation theatre charges and procedure charges only in proportion to the room rent it allows. You pay the rest from your own pocket.
HDFC ERGOStrongOptima RestoreThere is no room rent cap. Hospital room and boarding sit inside the in-patient benefit and are paid up to your Sum Insured, with no room category and no daily rupee ceiling. Because there is no cap, the wording carries no proportionate deduction clause, so picking a costlier room does not cut what is paid on the rest of your bill.
The stay has to be a hospital admission of at least 24 hours to count as hospitalisation, unless it is a day care procedure. Room rent is defined here to include associated medical expenses, so those charges are paid from the same Sum Insured.
Care HealthStrongCare AdvantageYour room has no separate limit. The policy states room category eligibility as 'no sub-limit', so any room you take is paid from your Sum Insured with no proportionate deduction.
The no-limit room holds only while Optional Cover 8 is left out. If you take that premium discount, check your Policy Schedule: the cap becomes a Single Private Room, which the policy defines as the hospital's most basic and most economical single air-conditioned room.
Aditya BirlaStrongActiv One · VYTLYour hospital room is paid at its actual cost, up to the Sum Insured - no daily rupee cap and no room category limit on any plan. Most plans also let you cut your premium by opting into a room ceiling of a Single Private Room or a shared room; VIP and VIP+ do not offer that choice.
If you opt into a Room Rent Type Option to save premium, you accept a room ceiling for the whole policy year. The policy does not state what it pays if you then take a room above that category, so get that answer in writing before you opt in.
Care HealthStrongCare SupremeThere is no room rent cap and no room category limit, so any room you take is covered up to the Sum Insured.
The optional Room Rent Modification benefit lowers your premium by limiting you to a Single Private AC Room or a Twin Sharing Room. If you buy that option and take a costlier room, you pay a proportionate share of the associated medical expenses too.
HDFC ERGOStrongOptima Secure · Optima-SecureMost plans pay your hospital room at actuals - no daily rupee cap and no room category limit. Optima Select caps you at a Single Private room and Optima Lite at 1% of base sum insured per day.

Star HealthStandardStar Health AssureYour room entitlement rises with the Sum Insured. At Rs.5 lakh and Rs.7.5 lakh the room is capped at 1% of Sum Insured per day; from Rs.10 lakh you get any room except a Suite or above, and from Rs.50 lakh any room at all. If you take a room above your entitlement, the insurer cuts the same percentage off your room rent and associated medical expenses.
At Rs.5 lakh Sum Insured the room is capped at Rs.5,000 per day. A room above that triggers a proportionate deduction on the room and associated medical expenses, so a single upgrade can cost you tens of thousands of rupees on a large bill.
Star HealthStandardStar ComprehensiveYour room is covered at a Private Single A/C Room, which the policy defines as the most economical single-occupancy room the hospital has - not a deluxe room or a suite.
Take a room above that category and the insurer cuts the same proportion from your nursing, operation theatre and doctor's fees too.
Star HealthStandardFamily Health OptimaYour room is covered at a Private Single A/C Room, which the policy defines as the most economical single-occupancy room the hospital has - not a deluxe room or a suite.
